This workshop will take place over two 3-hour evening sessions:
6pm - 9pm, Wednesday 2nd of October, and
6pm - 9pm, Wednesday 9th of October
This is a workshop for anyone who likes the idea of using clay that they have dug themselves, but doesn’t know where to start. As well as learning through using samples of clay provided by your tutor, Mark Tamura, you'll have the opportunity to bring in your own found clay and find out how to test and process it to see if it will work as a viable potting clay.
Mark is a wild/found clay enthusiast. His favourite thing about working with wild clay is being able to give someone back a piece of pottery that started its life as a piece of earth from a place that is special to them – something that can connect them with that place whenever they use it. On his journey along this wild clay path, Mark has found and used many local clay bodies, researching and testing as he goes.
In this workshop Mark will show you how to:
- Identify clay in the wild
- Undertake some basic field-testing
- Process wild clay using the wet processing method
- Blend clay to adjust its properties
- Test fire clay
Your course fee covers:
- Your tutor's time and knowledge
- The facilities at the Waikato Society of Potters
- Use of the tools and equipment
- Small amounts of additional clay if needed for blending with your wild clay
- Firing of any test bars and small pieces you make with your wild clay samples
