Foundations of the head and neck
Sculpting the Head, face and neck in clay through the fundamental understanding of basic simplified anatomy, proportions and elements to recreate a human head figure.
The understanding of an average human head constitution and proportions, makes possible to build a strong base, a step by step methodology as a foundational guidance to catch the subtleties of a portrait next.
Javier has often witnessed students in his other workshops running into trouble sculpting heads and faces. The eyes may be bigger than they should; ears are fixed in unrealistic places. That’s why he created Head Studies. In these classes, students cover face, head and neck construction.
Despite the emphasis on structure, these workshops are less technical than the Russian approach to figure. The students use divisions and planes to help them build the head from scratch, however the aim is to present the visage in an organic rather than geometrical style. Like Simplified Figure, we approach the face – especially the soft tissue – in a sketch-like fashion.
