Join us to being your journey visualising data with this Level 1, Introduction to Power BI.

Microsoft Power BI Desktop is an application that connects to a variety of potentially unrelated sources of data and allows the easy transformation of data in preparation for creating powerful Business Insights in the form of visualisations and reports. There are many errors that can be made forming a Power BI data model, so this course focuses on ‘Best Practice’ so that you have a well-formed data model and creating real time reports and visualisations is straight forward.

Your data might be an Excel spreadsheet, or a collection of cloud-based and on-premises hybrid data warehouses. Power BI lets you easily connect to your data sources, visualise and discover what's important, and share that with anyone or everyone you want.

This workshop will introduce you to Microsoft’s Power BI tool for connecting and analysing data. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn:

  • the essential methods of connecting to data correctly
  • transforming that data so that you will have a data set that is easy to get real insights and valuable information
  • how to get data from a variety of sources including text/csv, Excel and database files and bring that data into Power BI.
  • transform data using the Power Query editor including pivoting, transposing, splitting, duplicating, merging, appending, replacing, formatting, applying functions and creating parameter queries and dynamic lists in preparation for reporting and visualisations.

Who should attend

This workshop is for those who have never used Power BI, as well as beginners and those that are self-taught and want to learn best practice for working in Power BI.

Prerequisites

It is recommended that attendees are familiar with working with data. It is also helpful to have some experience working with datasets involving more than one table, and a basic understanding of how they are related. A good knowledge of Excel is helpful for this workshop. If you are unsure please contact us.

This workshop will be followed by Power BI - Reports and Visualisations (Level 2)

Please bring your laptop for a hands-on workshop, with Microsoft Power BI Desktop installed, with lots of practical exercises facilitated by the very experienced and knowledgeable Cathi Barker from Software Solutions.

Cathi is a great facilitator, we've had wonderful feedback from previous workshops she's delivered for SociaLink.

Spaces are limited to 8 per workshop, register early to secure your space.
