About this Presentation/Workshop
Stalking, strangulation, separation, sexual violence and suicide are five of the deadly S’s associated with family violence and intimate partner homicide. This presentation seeks to provide participants with an opportunity to understand issues associated with strangulation in the context of intimate partner violence, including the signs, symptoms and dynamics associated with strangulation in the context of intimate partner violence (IPV). Described as ‘a red flag on the trajectory to homicide’, strangulation together with other associated risk markers should be considered in all risk assessment and safety planning processes.
The session will also facilitate a conversation about stalking. This general introduction to stalking, should be consistent with, and complement our draft legislation when introduced.
By the end of this ‘workshop’ participants will be able to:
- Understand strangulation in the context of intimate partner violence
- Describe the signs, symptoms and injuries associated with strangulation
- Strangulation and sex
- Understand stalking and the context in which stalking occurs
- Understand behaviours often associated with stalking including use of technology
- Describe the dynamics associated with stalking (including the SLII framework), the typology and demographics of people involved and relationships between victims and perpetrators
- Have conversations with victims/survivors about stalking
- Discuss the draft legislation proposed for New Zealand.
